When computer programs first appeared in schools, they were expected to replace textbooks within a decade. That did not happen. Forty years later the most common use of a computer in a classroom is still writing and searching, and the promised revolution has arrived in a far quieter form.
Teachers who work with automatic systems describe the same pattern. A program is excellent at drilling: it never becomes tired, it marks instantly, and it can produce as many similar exercises as a pupil needs. It is much weaker at explaining why an answer is wrong, because the reason usually lies in something the pupil did not say. A good teacher hears hesitation; a program sees only the final answer.
The most successful schools in recent studies are not those with the most equipment. They are the ones where the technology takes over the repetitive part of the work and gives the teacher time for conversation. In several cases the amount of screen time actually fell after new software was introduced, because the same practice could be done in half the time.
There is one warning that appears in almost every report. Pupils quickly learn to satisfy the program rather than to understand the subject, and this habit is difficult to break. The researchers who noticed it argue that the answer is not less technology but better questions: exercises where guessing does not work.

Summer temperatures in large cities are regularly several degrees higher than in the countryside around them. The reason is well known: stone and asphalt absorb heat during the day and release it at night, while there is little water and little shade to cool the air. What is new is the scale of the problem and the seriousness with which city administrations now treat it.
For a long time the standard answer was air conditioning. It works for those who can afford it, but it makes the street outside hotter, because the heat removed from a room has to go somewhere. Cities that relied on this solution alone found themselves in a competition that nobody could win.
The measures that actually help are old and unspectacular. Trees lower the temperature of a street by several degrees, and a row of them costs less than a single air-conditioning system for a small office block. Light-coloured roofs reflect sunlight instead of storing it. Open water — even a narrow canal — cools the air around it for a considerable distance.
The difficulty is that these measures take years to show an effect, while the political cycle is short. A mayor who plants trees will not be in office when they grow tall enough to matter. Several cities have therefore written their heat plans into law, so that the work continues regardless of who is elected. Whether this approach survives the first difficult budget remains to be seen.

Every January thousands of people across the country spend an hour watching the birds in their garden or in the nearest park and send the results to a research centre. The survey has run for more than twenty years, and its data now form one of the longest continuous records of urban bird populations anywhere.
Professional ornithologists were sceptical at first. Amateur observers misidentify species, they said; they watch at convenient times rather than at scientifically chosen ones; and they stop sending data when they lose interest. All three objections were correct. The organisers answered them not by arguing but by designing the survey around them: a short list of easily recognisable species, a fixed hour on a fixed weekend, and a deliberately simple form.
The result is not a perfect dataset, and the centre says so openly in every publication. What it is, however, is enormous. No research institute could afford to place forty thousand observers across the country on the same morning, and no sampling method can replace that coverage. Trends that would take a professional team a decade to notice appear in the amateur data within three or four years.
The organisers are careful about what they claim. The survey cannot explain why a species is declining; it can only show that it is. Explanation requires fieldwork of a different kind. But knowing where to look is half the work, and that is precisely what the January hour provides.

About one worker in five in developed countries is employed outside normal daytime hours. Hospitals, transport, power stations and security cannot stop at six in the evening, and for a long time the only question asked about night work was how much it should be paid.
Medical research has changed that question. The human body runs on an internal clock that expects light in the morning and darkness at night. Working against this clock is not simply tiring: it affects digestion, blood pressure and the immune system. Studies following nurses over several decades found measurable differences in health between those who worked nights regularly and those who did not, even after allowing for smoking, diet and income.
The practical conclusions, however, are not what campaigners expected. Banning night work is impossible in most of the affected industries. What helps is the design of the schedule. Rotating shifts forward — morning, then evening, then night — is easier for the body than rotating them backwards. Long blocks of night shifts followed by long breaks cause fewer problems than single nights scattered through the week. Bright light at the start of a shift and darkness afterwards make a measurable difference.
None of this is expensive, and yet surveys show that most employers still build schedules around convenience rather than around the evidence. The reason usually given is that staff themselves prefer the familiar pattern, which is true, and which researchers consider the most difficult obstacle of all.

Every translator knows the moment when a sentence refuses to move from one language into another. The difficulty is rarely a rare word; dictionaries deal with those. It is usually something the original takes for granted — a joke that depends on word order, a form of address that signals distance, a reference that every reader of the source language recognises instantly.
Professional practice offers three ways out, and each has a price. The translator can explain in a footnote, which is accurate and destroys the rhythm. He can replace the reference with a local equivalent, which reads smoothly and quietly changes the setting. Or he can leave the difficulty visible, trusting the reader to notice that something foreign is happening. Publishers usually prefer the second solution; scholars usually prefer the first; readers, when asked, are divided.
Machine translation has not removed the problem, although it has changed where it appears. Programs now handle ordinary prose well enough that professional translators spend most of their time on exactly the passages that resist automation. Several translators interviewed for a recent study said their work had become harder and more interesting at the same time.
The study's authors draw a cautious conclusion. Translation, they write, is not the transfer of meaning from one container to another. It is the writing of a new text under unusually strict constraints — and that, so far, remains a human activity.

Buying used goods was once a sign of poverty. In many countries it has become a matter of choice, and the numbers are no longer small: in some categories of clothing and electronics the second-hand market now grows faster than the market for new products.
Three separate forces are behind the change. The first is technical: online platforms with photographs, ratings and simple payment removed most of the risk from buying a used object from a stranger. The second is economic: prices of new goods have risen faster than incomes in several categories, while the quality of older items has not fallen. The third is cultural, and it is the one that companies find hardest to predict — for a significant group of younger buyers, owning something used is not embarrassing but interesting.
Manufacturers responded in two opposite ways. Some tried to make resale difficult, using parts that cannot be replaced and software that stops working when a device changes owner. Others did the opposite: they opened their own second-hand shops, repaired returned goods and sold them with a guarantee. The second strategy looked risky, because it appears to compete with the company's new products. In practice it has worked better, partly because the seller keeps the customer and partly because a repaired item supports the reputation of the brand.
Economists studying the market warn against one common conclusion. A growing second-hand market does not automatically mean less production. It means less production only if buyers who purchase a used item would otherwise have bought a new one — and that, surveys suggest, is true in about half of the cases.
